Slum Child in School

Leading Light

Leading Light is our main educational project, where the children work in groups according to ability, rather than age. These are the same children who we first made contact with in the slums and where many of them still continue to live, children who when we first met them would not have had the opportunity to better themselves with an education. Lessons consist of English, Maths, Science, Geography and Crafts, the curriculum we use complies with the Indian model, which contributes to preparing the children for introduction to the local state school. As with all our projects we continue to support these children's medical, nutritional and welfare needs.

We are very proud of the fact that we now supporting sixteen children who have progressed from Leading Light and are now attending the local school. We provide the children with all their school equipment, books and uniforms, (The Indian Education Law 2009 now states that all children aged from six to fourteen must to be registered in a state school, this unfortunately requires pupils to provide these items themselves which prevents many children attending). The children continue to drop in to Leading Light where they receive a meal and support with their education and general welfare.
