Educators’ Trust India

Educators' Trust India runs educational and welfare projects for children in Goa, India. Our work relies on charitable donations and is supported by a dedicated team of global volunteers.

We provide a non-denominational education through our three schools and outreach project; preparing children for registration to the local state schools. The children are from families of migrant workers who flock here from other parts of India, looking for work and opportunities that they think Goa will offer them. Unfortunately this is rarely, if ever the case. Children often end up begging on the beaches, picking up litter or perhaps selling jewellery and peanuts to earn a few rupees. Most of these children are employed by the owners of the land which make up the rural slums where the families live in their makeshift tents; generally speaking the wages they earn are then returned to the landlords to pay for the spaces where they live. We therefore aim to break this cycle of illiteracy and child labour, which keeps these children and their families in poverty.

Through the provision of education we support those most in need, encouraging Goa's underprivileged, migrant children; to inspire their own potential, stimulating their confidence and self-awareness and helping them develop a pride in India so building a brighter future for themselves. As well as teaching English, Maths, Science and crafts we educate the children and their parents about hygiene, health and nutrition. All the children we work with including those who have progressed and now attend state school are provided with a daily meal, a supply of fresh drinking water, fruit and milk.

The families live in shacks and slum settlements, many without access to such basics as running water, sanitation or even a roof over their heads. In addition to our three schools, we also run an outreach programme in the slum areas where we encourage the need for education, good food and hygiene; there are many links between poor health and poverty and take an active rold with sick or injured children via our weekly drop-in clinic, run by a retired British GP.

We can't do this work without your help. Friends of Educators Trust

A UK registered charity No. 1137864 we work as one with Educators' Trust India. Made up of a group of supporters working on a voluntary basis from our homes in the UK; Friends of Educators' Trust was initially set up to raise funds for the projects in Goa, but as both charities have grown over the past few years our involvement has also grown, we now support Educators' Trust India in many different ways, including assisting with the volunteer programme, promotion, development of the newsletters, keeping in touch with our supporters and applying for grants. By working from our homes we carry no overheads meaning there is absolutely no cost to Educators' Trust India and that every penny that we raise is donated directly to support the projects in India. We are the contact for anyone wishing to donate or help raise funds. It is important to remember that you don't have to live in the UK to get involved, so if you want to help or have any ideas please get in touch.
